How the program works

You should have a genuine interest in one of the trades we offer and be prepared for both classroom and hands-on training. Our information sessions and selection interviews help ensure you’re ready to start your journey with us.
1.
ACADEMIC
ASSESSMENT
After attending the information session, you’ll take an academic assessment. The assessment helps us know if you’re ready for the training program, with the basic math and English skills required for a career in the trades.
2.
SELECTION
INTERVIEW
After the academic assessment, you will be interviewed. During this interview, our staff will discuss your readiness, willingness, and ability to commit to the program and employment in the construction trades. This is an opportunity for us to understand your goals and for you to ask questions.
3.
FUNDING
SUPPORT
Once accepted into the program, we refer you to resources to apply for a living allowance and other funding options. Our team will guide you through this process.

What to expect

While some of the training is done classroom style, Trade Winds mostly gives you hands-on training that makes sense. You receive safety tickets, personal protective equipment (PPE), and a carefully guided experience to ensure success.

Be industry-ready when you graduate

Graduates of Trade Winds are highly sought after by employers. Our program serves as the best screening tool for employers, helping them hire motivated workers who are committed to excellence in their trade. But our job doesn’t stop at training. We offer employment support services to help you transition smoothly from training into rewarding and stable employment.

Meet Dante Houle

TRADE WINDS GRADUATE
Dante Houle grew up in Wabasca, Alberta, a small reservation town where everyone knew who you were. He says he was never a great student, especially when it came to math.

After high school, Dante’s focus was on making money to help out his family. He didn’t have goals for attending post secondary, or to travel.

“I just kept on working even more hours. One day I discovered a goal to reach for, with a sparkle in my eyes.” He arrived home from work one evening and told his mom he wanted to get into a trade – maybe mechanics or plumbing.

“She said to research a place called Trade Winds to Success because my uncle had just finished his electrician trade schooling,” he recalls. “After a week I decided that the electrician course was for me. I never thought that going to Trade Winds would help me understand math & science properly but that’s just how much the instructors and staff at Trade Winds helped me out – academically, but also financially, along with my mind and body.”

For a couple of months life was very busy with work and school. But Dante says it was also the most fulfilled his soul had felt since he scored his first game-winning shot in hockey as a kid.

“The instructors always knew a couple of ways to explain things to help us understand,” says Dante.

“I’m now finished my first trade job, met good people on my crew who taught me how to save, what to keep in mind about the trade, answered a LOT of my questions. I see a brighter future with this job than any other job I’ve ever had.”
