The Towards Net Zero Residential Construction project, funded through the Canadian Apprenticeship Strategy will help Trade Winds provide pre-trades training and support to over 290 students pursuing careers in Carpentry, Electrical, Industrial Mechanics, and Welding over a five-year period. Students who participate in the Residential Construction Program will gain exposure to the many facets of the Carpentry trade by constructing high-efficiency small homes that will be gifted to Indigenous communities across Alberta.

The announcement strongly aligns with the Government of Canada’s commitment to addressing barriers to employment and economic advancement for Indigenous communities, including the ongoing housing gap. Minister MacKinnon further emphasized the importance of building affordable housing now and the positive impact this project will have on labour participation and new home construction.

“Communities across Canada need housing quickly. Investments like this one in the Towards Net Zero Residential Construction project is growing our workforce to build the homes we need while lifting barriers to labour participation and creating good-paying jobs along the way.” – Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, Steve MacKinnon Looking ahead, the significance of this agreement cannot be overstated. It represents a bold, forward-thinking approach to building a stronger, more inclusive future where Indigenous people are empowered to contribute to and benefit from a thriving economy.

Trade Winds looks forward to continuing its vital work and this contribution sets the stage for a brighter tomorrow.
