“I discovered a goal to reach for, with a sparkle in my eyes.”
Dante Houle grew up in Wabasca, Alberta, a small reservation town where everyone knew who you were. He says he was never a great student, especially when it came to math.
After high school, Dante’s focus was on making money to help out his family. He didn’t have goals for attending post secondary, or to travel.
“I just kept on working even more hours. One day I discovered a goal to reach for, with a sparkle in my eyes.” He arrived home from work one evening and told his mom he wanted to get into a trade – maybe mechanics or plumbing.
“She said to research a place called Trade Winds to Success because my uncle had just finished his electrician trade schooling,” he recalls. “After a week I decided that the electrician course was for me. I never thought that going to Trade Winds would help me understand math & science properly but that’s just how much the instructors and staff at Trade Winds helped me out – academically, but also financially, along with my mind and body.”
For a couple of months life was very busy with work and school. But Dante says it was also the most fulfilled his soul had felt since he scored his first game-winning shot in hockey as a kid.
“The instructors always knew a couple of ways to explain things to help us understand,” says Dante.
“I’m now finished my first trade job, met good people on my crew who taught me how to save, what to keep in mind about the trade, answered a LOT of my questions. I see a brighter future with this job than any other job I’ve ever had.”
