Julie Kahnapace

Apprentice Welder

Hello, my name is Julie Kahnapace, I was born in Valleyview AB, raised on the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation. I am the oldest of my siblings and I come from a family of 8 children 3 girls and 5 boys.

I am a mother of 5 children: 2 girls and 3 boys. I am very lucky and fortunate I got to take the pre-trades welding with Trade Winds to Success. During my time with Trade Winds in 2017, I took the Boilermaker Welder trade.

It was a real struggle but I completed it, at the ending of the program during this period I had separated from the father of my children ending a 13 years relationship. Of course, to many, they know it can be difficult to continue after such a life-changing event.  I moved back to my mother’s house and changed my number at that time I started becoming depressed and give-up on the dreams and goals of being a welder.

When I took the pre-trades program we were always told that there are many resources and supports they offer to help to deal with the things that may come up like the barriers that could potentially affect our career.

I am very thankful to this day for Carol Lee, Program Assistant, and Sherri Houle, Client Services Coordinator, for getting together with the rest of the board to see what they could do to help me succeed with my passion.

Sherri and Carol both went above and beyond to track me down and see how I was doing. And honestly, it was that phone call that changed my life to this day and helped push me to my goals of being a welder.

I am one of the fortunate students to get a second chance at pursuing my career goal. I am currently doing my first-year welding training and am an apprentice.

I believe that the push from the team at Trade Winds to Success and the support they show is what got me through a lot and has helped me to open my eyes and given me tools to use in the everyday life to help me to accomplish my goals and overcome any barriers. This program has really helped to turn my dreams and goals into realities.
