Hands-on training for Indigenous students to build careers as electricians, industrial mechanics, ironworkers, plumbers, steamfitter-pipefitters, or welders.
Partnering with union training centres, Trade Winds to Success offers comprehensive training in commercial and industrial trades, equipping you with hands-on experience and industry-relevant knowledge needed to succeed in these high-demand fields.

We are dedicated to helping you grow professionally and build a lasting career, while also supporting the strength and success of Indigenous communities across Alberta. Read on for more information about training in these trades.

Classes in our program are demanding, with full attendance expected. If you miss three days in a row without a serious reason or accumulate multiple absences, you may be asked to leave the program. This policy ensures commitment and readiness for the demands of the trades. Our supportive environment gives you guidance to face barriers or life complications that may affect your success.

Trade Winds Foundations and Academic Preparation

CONTENT:
Foundations bridges your life experience with the expectations of the trades. Topics include orientation, overcoming employment barriers, computer technology, team building, first aid certification, and financial literacy.

SUPPORT:
You’ll review trades math and science to prepare for the Apprenticeship and Industry Training entrance exam. This helps ensure you have the knowledge you’ll need for your chosen trade and become eligible for apprenticeship in Alberta. When you successfully complete this part of the program and pass the exam, you’ll receive personal protective equipment (PPE).
OUTCOME:
Participants are registered for the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training entrance exam and receive the preparation to succeed.

Career Skills Development

Job readiness training: Job readiness training is included throughout the program. This includes resume and cover letter writing, interview skills, and advice to successfully progress through your apprenticeship.

Employment referrals: When you graduate and are work-ready, you’re connected with employment opportunities through our network of industry partners.

Pipe Trades Training

Start your journey to become a plumber, welder, or steamfitter/pipefitter
Our Pipe Trades program provides you with hands-on training and essential skills to start a rewarding career in trades such as plumbing, welding, or steamfitting- pipefitting. Whether you’re installing or maintaining piping systems, joining metal parts through welding, or working with high-pressure steam systems, our program gives you the knowledge and practical experience needed to succeed. We are committed to helping you build a strong foundation in these high-demand trades, preparing you for a secure and fulfilling career.

The shop and practical theory portion prepares you for entry to a plumber, steamfitter-pipefitter, or welder apprenticeship. During the program you will spend time learning theory and hands-on experience in all three trades.

Pre-apprentice Welder Training

This program is unique from the pipe trades program in that it gives the opportunity for students to challenge the first year welder exam.

Welding pre-apprenticeship program
(Eighteen weeks)
  • 6 weeks foundations
  • 12 weeks shop and practical theory
  • 60% theory
  • 40% practical hands-on training
  • Prepares students to challenge their first year, covering first year theory and hands-on training.
  • You will acquire the expertise to assemble, mold, and trim metal components for different uses, ranging from pressure vessels to industrial parts. The program offers a blend of classroom instruction, practical workshops, and ample independent study opportunities
  • Under the guidance of experienced instructors, you will benefit from industry knowledge and support, engage with the latest welding tools and techniques, and connect with a network of industry professionals, trade experts, and potential employers

Industrial Mechanic/
Millwright Training

Our Industrial Mechanic program equips you with the skills and knowledge to maintain, repair, and troubleshoot machinery and equipment in industrial settings. From working on mechanical systems to diagnosing equipment issues, this hands-on program prepares you for a wide range of tasks crucial to keeping industrial operations running smoothly. With a focus on practical experience and industry-relevant training, we’re here to help you build a strong foundation for a successful career as an industrial mechanic.

Industrial mechanic program
(Fourteen weeks)
  • 6 weeks in foundations
  • 8 weeks in shop and practical theory
  • Engage in hands-on activities that enable you to put theory into practice, enriching your learning journey and boosting your confidence. First-year theory covers machining, machining installation, alignment, as well as drawings, measurements, and layouts.
  • Intro to Millwright book, pretest, chapter review in class
  • Shop, steam turbine disassembly and measuring of components, reassembly
  • Pump overhaul tech level 1 with hands-on pump work in the shop
  • Shaft alignment tech level 1, with hands-on work in shop with dial indicator and last alignment processes

Electrician Training

Our Electrician program provides you with the hands-on experience and technical skills needed to succeed in the electrical trade. You’ll learn to install, maintain, and repair electrical systems, gaining a deep understanding of wiring, circuits, and safety protocols. Our program is designed to prepare you for a rewarding career as an electrician, offering the practical knowledge and pathway to industry certification needed to power your future success.

Electrician training program
(Fourteen weeks)
  • 6 weeks in foundations
  • 8 weeks in shop and practical theory
  • Learn fundamental theories and principles of electrical work crucial for a first-year electrician apprentice
  • Acquire practical skills in basic wiring techniques to be a valuable contributor from the start of your apprenticeship
  • Get essential training in safety practices to guarantee personal and workplace safety while dealing with electrical systems
  • Become familiar with actual job tasks through hands-on labs and workshops

Ironworker Training

Our Ironworker program prepares you with the skills needed to excel in the field of ironwork. You’ll learn to fabricate, construct, and assemble scaffolding, structural steel buildings, bridges, ornamental ironwork, and pre-cast structures. As an ironworker, you'll be responsible for building key structural elements, installing reinforcing steel and post-tension tendons, and setting up conveyors and robotic equipment. Whether working on new construction or renovation projects, this program equips you with the practical experience and knowledge to succeed in this dynamic and rewarding trade.
